Amazon review downloader - browser extension
About
Amazon are constantly changing the functionality with our Amazon profile page and one of the consequences of this is that, in late 2024, the ability to see how many hearts a review has received was no longer be available.
That's a pain for some of us, partly because we like to see whether what we write is appreciated, but also so that we have feedback on what makes a good review and what makes a "meh..." one.
So this extension was created to allow you to download the reviews from your profile page, their star ratings and the number of hearts they have received.
How it works
When you visit your profile page at https://www.amazon.co.uk/profile, and select the "Reviews" tab, you will see your most recent reviews. Scrolling down causes the page to fetch more reviews until it has them all.
When you click on the extension, it mimics this behaviour, by scrolling the browser page to the last review, waiting to see whether more are loaded, scrolls to the last, etc. until Amazon stops loading reviews. Once it has loaded all the reviews into the browser, it reads them all, converts them to a CSV file and saves them to your downloads folder.
No information is returned to me or any other central server or service - everything happens 100% inside your browser.
Limitations and known issues
- UK only: There is no technical reason why this wouldn't work for other countries, but initially it is hard coded to only work on amazon.co.uk
- Timeouts: When it scrolls to the last review, it waits for up to five seconds to see whether any more reviews got loaded - that timeout may need to be extended in the real world. The symptom would be that sometimes you get all your reviews, sometimes you don't.
- Review count limit: There is a hard timeout of 60 seconds for the entire process - my 807 reviews get downloaded in around 15 seconds so it's probably good for around 3,000 reviews. I suspect this number could also be increased.
- Reliability: It is entirely dependent on Amazon returning reviews correctly on the profile page - even when just scrolling manually, it's relatively common (maybe 1 in five times) for the page to just stop and not load any more reviews. This is a problem on Amazon's end so, if you see this, the best suggestion would be to refresh the page and retry.
